A Note from Donna
===========================================================
OK--so the first quarter is just about over. How are your
kids doing? I know mine are doing well in some subjects and
struggling with others. This is a great time to reinforce
some practices that may have fallen by the wayside in the
midst of sports, friends, and extra-curricular activities.
We can encourage our kids by letting them know that the second
quarter can be better than the first. Here are 3 tips to help
our kids tackle the challenges they face and raise the bar in
the second quarter.

3 Tips to Tackle the Second Quarter from the Start!
1. Identify the problem. Though this may seem simple
enough, it may not be as easy to identify the true root of
our kids academic challenges. They may be struggling with
motivation that we interpret for laziness. They may be
dealing with peer issues and feeling pressured all day. And
they may truly be struggling with comprehension issues. Be
a Sherlock and find out.
2. Help them decide on an action plan. Once you know
the real deal is then you have to help them develop a plan
and strategy to cope with their issues. Perhaps they need to
stay after school or get a tutor. Maybe they need to hang with
a different circle of friends or they need help getting
organized. Whatever the case may be, we as parents can
do more than just help with tonight's homework; we can help
set in motion strategies they will use in school and in life.
3. Monitor progress. It's not enough to just get the ball rolling and walk away. This is the time to check the school
homework site, be in touch with teachers and counselors, and
be vigilant about helping your child stay on top of the school
work brought home everyday.
Our role is a constant and committed one. Let's applaud their
effort as they rise up and do what they should and them
when they start to go off course and by doing so we will help
them as they journey through the next quarter and the rest of
their school year.
